THE HISTORY OF AYURVEDA
Ayurveda, like many Vedic teachings (yes, including Yoga!) was originally shared via storytelling in a powerful oral tradition.
Its history is complex and laced with sociopolitical layers as well as vibrant mythology.
In the origin story of Ayurveda, Brahma (the Hindu God of creation) conceived the knowledge in meditation and then passed it on to his disciples. Don't be fooled by the mythology, however, Ayurveda has been and maintains its position as a science first and foremost.
During the British colonial rule of India, Ayurveda was forced into hiding, and moved deep into the forests of Kerala, India, which is now regarded as its birthplace. Indians kept the traditions alive behind closed doors as it was forbidden to practice and there would be severe consequences for doing so.
Fast forward to today, and Ayurveda and Yoga are having a resurgence in the modern world as well as in India as people seek to be reconnected to this ancient healing wisdom.
It's important to keep in mind the history as we continue to practice and share Ayurveda, Yoga, and Meditation, and be mindful of those that may feel sensitive due to its colonial past.
